Take a trip to Salt's Mill in Saltaire a former textile mill now home to an impressive collection of works by Yorkshire-born artist David Hockney.
Further south, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park is another must. The beautiful parkland provides a perfect setting for some of the most exciting contemporary sculpture.
Artists' studios are regularly open to the public in Hebden Bridge and Holmfirth. The Booth House Gallery near Holmbridge has a large display of contemporary ceramics and masterclasses in watercolour painting are run regularly by celebrated moorland landscape artist Ashley Jackson, whose gallery is a landmark in Holmfirth.
The moors around Haworth will always be linked to the work of the Brontes, but don't forget the former poet laureate Ted Hughes grew up in Mytholmroyd.
Regular events on the arts calendar include the Ilkley Literature Festival and the long-established Hebden Bridge Arts Festival. Holmfirth Arts Festival takes place each year in June where you'll an eclectic mix of jazz, outdoor sculpture, orchestra, youth theatre, toys, literature and of course a range of art to purchase. Mytholmroyd also has a festival dedicated to Ted Hughes.
