Go Green in Pennine Yorkshire

Visitors to Pennine Yorkshire are warmly invited to participate in the work of looking after our much-loved landscape by helping in the development of responsible tourism.

We have a fantastic network of railways and bus routes through the valleys and over the hills, so you really can leave the car behind and reach your destination by public transport.  Special rural buses reach out even to remote corners of our countryside.

Much of our upland moorland is rare blanket bog habitat and has been designated as a site of special scientific interest.  Please look after the landscape by ensuring that the peat is not eroded.  If you are riding a mountain bike, please obey the law by keeping to bridleways.

The moors are the home in Spring for many ground-nesting birds, including several rare species of wader.  Please keep to paths in open country during the nesting season (March - June) and do not allow dogs to run loose (dogs are not permitted at all on some moors).

Pennine Yorkshire offers pioneering green tourism attractions, including the National Trust's exemplary self-sufficient Gibson Mill (in Hardcastle Crags) and Hebden Bridge's Alternative Technology Centre.  Both welcome group visits. You'll find many of our hotels and B&Bs are doing their bit for the environment, too, by committing to running their businesses in a sustainable way.

Pennine Yorkshire communities are also trying to combat light pollution of the night sky when selecting street lighting.   The Astronomy Centre near Todmorden welcomes visitors for planet and star-gazing evenings.
